The SC said that "Don't derail working systems. Let the collegium perform its duty. The collegium system is the most transparent." In fact, this argument started after Mr. Kiren Rijiju, the law minister, criticised the collegium system for being secretive and opaque and declared that it ought to be replaced with an alternate system while participating in various media engagements. The government cannot accept a system in which judges select judges. No other country, according to him, has a system like India's, where the government proposes nominees but a collegium of judges recommends them. SC has defended the Collegium System amid calls for its overhaul. The court was hearing a petition linked to the 2018 meeting of the SC collegium.
