The Uttarakhand High Court's decision to remove encroachments from railway land in Haldwani was stayed by the Supreme Court on Thursday. 50,000 people cannot be removed overnight, the supreme court said. The matter will be now heard by the supreme court on February 7. The Uttarakhand government and India Railways received a notice from the SC regarding the arguments contesting the High Court's ruling. After the Uttarakhand High Court ordered the removal of encroachments in December 2022, more than 5,000 homes in the Banbhoolpura neighbourhood of Haldwani are in danger of being demolished.
