In this episode of Beyond The Headline, the host Tamanna Inamdar will discuss how the Supreme Court issued a precedent-setting ruling today regarding the selection of the Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners, maintaining that the independence of the Election Commission was of the utmost importance. The five-judge panel's chief justice, Justice KM Joseph, gave the decision, stating that the election commission "must be independent; it cannot pretend to be independent while acting unfairly." It said that a weak polling organisation would lead to a "insidious situation". The 5-0 unanimous decision said that the President would pick the poll panel's senior officials based on a three-member panel's recommendations. The Prime Minister, the Lok Sabha's Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India will make up this three-person panel. A few panelists join us. “Credibility of institutions like Election Commission is not a one-day affair. Reputation is built over a period of time. What happens in an #electoral process is out there in public domain,” says Jagdeep Chhokar, Co-founder, ADR.
