as posted by the channelOn Thursday, the Supreme Court mandated the formation of a panel for the nomination of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners that will include the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. A number of petitions calling for reform in the selection procedure for members of the Election Commission of India were being heard by a five-judge panel of the country's highest court, led by Justice KM Joseph. The court ruled that elections must unquestionably be fair and that it is the responsibility of the ECI to uphold the process' integrity. "The appointment of an Election Commissioner shall be on the recommendation of a committee comprising the PM, CJI and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha," said the bench.
