After the Pentagon claimed that the loss of the MQ-9 Reaper drone was caused by the intercept of the drone in international airspace, Washington summoned Russia's ambassador to express its displeasure at the "reckless" behaviour of the Russian pilots of two Su-27 fighter aircraft. According to Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, the jets swooped in front of the MQ-9 and splashed gasoline on it in an apparent attempt to blind or harm it before one of the planes struck the drone's propeller.
