2:33Now PlayingWomen in Karnataka will be able to travel for free on government-run buses beginning on Sunday, as the administration implements the first of the ruling Congress's five election pledges, the "Shakti" scheme. This free transit service will benefit around 41.8 lakh female passengers every day and will cost the state exchequer an estimated Rs 4,051.56 crore per year, according to officials. The scheme is open for women residing in Karnataka who travel within the state limits after 1 p.m. today. From the majestic steps of Vidhana Soudha, the seat of Karnataka legislative and secretariat here, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the scheme, which will provide free rides for women and girl students of the state in government buses.
