Dorsey Stirs Twitter Storm | Modi Government Fields Off Jack’s Attack | Beyond The Headline

In this episode of Beyond The Headline, host Tamanna Inamdar will discuss how Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of the social media platform, said that India threatened to shut down Twitter unless it cooperated with directives to censor accounts critical of the administration's handling of farmer demonstrations. The Narendra Modi government refuted this claim. Dorsey, who left his position as CEO of Twitter in 2021, said on Monday that India had also threatened the firm with staff raids if it did not remove specific postings at the behest of the government. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India's deputy minister for information technology, replied by labeling Dorsey's claims an "outright lie." Dorsey's remarks once again brought attention to the challenges international technology companies working with the Modi administration and the decreasing space to uphold free expression while still abiding by India's increasingly strict social media legislation. The charges made by the former CEO provided further insight into the difficulties Twitter faced in 2021 as the Modi administration tried to control the narrative around the farmer's demonstrations, which saw hundreds of thousands of farmers camp out near Delhi and call for the repeal of new agricultural legislation.
