This comes despite strong protests from neighbouring countries as well as environmental activists. An estimated 1.34 million tonnes of radioactive water— enough to fill 500 Olympic-size pools—has accumulated at the site since the 2011 tsunami incident. The water will be released over 30 years after being filtered and diluted. The decision comes weeks after the UN's nuclear watchdog approved the plan.
