27:50Now PlayingIn this episode of Beyond the Headline, anchor Shreya Upadhaya will be discussing the politics that erupted over Bihar's reservation proposal. The Bihar Assembly unanimously passed the Reservation Amendment Bill, which proposes increasing quotas for SCs, STs, other backward classes (OBCs), exceptionally backward classes (EBCs), and economically weaker sections (EWS) from 50% to 75%. The bill now goes to the Legislative Council for approval, with backing from all nine parties in the Bihar Assembly. This amendment will offer 10% reservations for EWS, 43% reservations for OBCs and EBCs, 20% reservations for SCs, and 2% reservations for STs. The decision comes in reaction to revised caste-based survey data showing an increase in OBC and EBC populations in Bihar.
We are joined by a few panellists to discuss this in detail. "In the minds of BR Ambedkar and other writers of the Constitution, reservation was a temporary measure. They wanted to set out a path so that reservations were not needed," said Joseph Mathai. Watch In!
