3:23Now PlayingTop News | After 20 months of delay, Sweden's proposal to join NATO was approved by the Turkish parliament on Tuesday, removing the largest obstacle to the expansion of the Western military alliance. The general assembly of Turkey, which is presided over by President Tayyip Erdogan's alliance, voted 287–55 to accept Sweden's 2022 application to strengthen its security in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Applications from nations looking to join NATO must be approved by every member of the alliance. Turkey objected to Sweden and Finland's request to join in 2022, claiming that the two nations were supporting terrorist organisations.
