Shahjahan is accused of sexual assault and land grabbing in Sadeshkhali village. His arrest comes in the wake of demonstrations in Sandeshkhali against suspected criminal acts by Shahjahan and other local TMC officials. After an attack on Enforcement Directorate personnel in Sandeshkhali last month, he had been avoiding the law. After weeks of pressure from different political and civic organisations demanding action, and with tensions in Sandeshkhali still high, the West Bengal government finally made the arrest.
