9:01Now PlayingA seven-judge Bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, has overturned the EV Chinnaiah verdict, which barred State Legislatures from sub-classifying Scheduled Castes for reservations. Chief Justice Chandrachud stated that Scheduled Castes are not a homogenous group, allowing states to allocate greater benefits to sub-classes based on varying levels of discrimination. This does not infringe on the President's authority under Article 341 to identify Scheduled Castes, but the states' power to sub-classify remains subject to judicial review.
