His father, Dev Raj Khanna, was a Delhi High Court judge, while his mother, Saroj Khanna, was a professor. Despite his parents' wish for him to become a chartered accountant, Sanjiv was inspired by his uncle, Justice Hans Raj Khanna, a prominent dissenting voice during the Emergency. Justice Hans Raj Khanna's courageous dissent in the 1976 ADM Jabalpur case, which opposed the suspension of personal liberty, is a landmark in Indian legal history.
