3:28Now PlayingOn January 7, 2025, farmers from various associations in Tamil Nadu staged a protest in Madurai, opposing a proposed tungsten mining project. The march, starting from Narasinghampatti Perumal Hill to Madurai’s Post Office, drew thousands of participants from surrounding regions. In Melur, a shutdown strike was also announced, causing business disruptions. The protesters voiced concerns about the 35,000-hectare mining project threatening their lands, especially in Melavalavu, Vanji Nagaram, Kambalipatti, and Singampunari. Residents, including women, blindfolded themselves and sang ‘oppari’ songs to express dissent. Rajeswaran, a farmer leader, highlighted the risk of losing their livelihoods and future due to the mining project.
