“Even if the US continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy," said the Finance Ministry.
The new levy came after US President Donald Trump hiked tariffs on Chinese imports to a staggering total of 145 per cent, further triggering the ongoing trade war between the world’s two top economies.
“The US imposition of abnormally high tariffs on China seriously violates international and economic trade rules, basic economic laws and common sense and is completely unilateral bullying and coercion," the Chinese finance ministry was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Earlier, Trump announced a 125 per cent tariff on Chinese goods on Wednesday. In retaliation, China imposed 84 per cent tariffs on US imports.
Later, the White House clarified that the newly announced 125 per cent duty would be applied on top of an existing 20 per cent tariff—originally imposed over China’s alleged involvement in the fentanyl supply chain—bringing the total effective tariff to 145 per cent.
