WASHINGTON DC - President Donald Trump's plan for extensive tax cuts faces another important test early Wednesday when the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives Rules Committee votes on whether to bring it forward in the full chamber for a vote. The unusual 1 a.m. ET (0500 GMT) hearing comes days after Moody's stripped the U.S. of its top-tier credit ratings over concerns about deepening deficits.
President Donald Trump warned Republicans on Wednesday that failure to pass his massive tax and immigration package would be “ultimate betrayal.” In a statement, the White House said the bill needs to “pass immediately” to keep promises that Trump and fellow Republicans made while campaigning. President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning turned up the heat on House Republican holdout votes, endangering passage of the megabill aimed at advancing his legislative agenda.
Trump spoke to the conference as more than a dozen Republicans seek additional changes to the legislation. Without changes, there is enough opposition to defeat it as Speaker Mike Johnson can only afford to lose three votes.
The Senate voted unanimously Tuesday to pass legislation that would eliminate the collection of federal taxes on tips, moving a step closer to fulfilling one of President Donald Trump’s key campaign promises.
