The quake, initially reported as magnitude 8.0, occurred at a depth of 10 km between South America and Antarctica. While no major damage or casualties have been reported due to its remote location, the tremor triggered precautionary tsunami alerts in Chile and Argentina, later lifted after assessments showed minimal risk. The quake was felt in southern coastal regions, highlighting the region’s vulnerability along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which has produced some of the world’s strongest earthquakes, including Chile’s record 9.5 magnitude quake in 1960.
