President and head of the military Xi Jinping is expected to deliver a speech on the occasion, to be attended by foreign leaders. China's military is the world’s largest standing military with more than 2 million members and an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of missiles, aircraft carriers and fighter aircraft.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping is presiding over a military parade in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square to commemorate the end of World War II. In a speech praising the armed forces, he said China’s rise is “unstoppable.”
• Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un flanked Xi as they walked through Tiananmen Square, the first time the trio has been pictured together, in a defiant challenge to the US-led world order.
• Featuring over 10,000 troops and hundreds of advanced weapons, the parade will reveal China’s growing military power under Xi’s push to modernize the world’s largest standing army.
