9:51Now PlayingDozens of French farmers staged dramatic protests across southern France and at the Palace of Versailles on Friday, denouncing the EU-Mercosur trade agreement and warning of a collapse in food sovereignty. In Perpignan, farmers dumped and burned piles of agricultural waste to protest cheap imports and overbearing environmental regulations, while winegrowers highlighted severe drought and lack of water infrastructure. At Versailles, around 20 tractors blocked palace gates under banners reading “The peasant revolt resumes” as farmers accused the EU of favoring imports over domestic producers. Union leaders warned the pact, which seeks to eliminate tariffs with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, threatens Europe’s agriculture and food security.
