The initiative takes inspiration from India’s model but will be tailored to suit Britain’s specific needs. Unlike Aadhaar, the Brit Card will not collect biometric data and will initially aim to tackle illegal employment by undocumented migrants. During a recent two-day visit to Mumbai, Starmer met with Nandan Nilekani—Infosys co-founder and key architect of Aadhaar—to learn how India scaled the digital ID system to reach nearly 1.4 billion people.
