U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will restart nuclear weapons testing, ending more than three decades of restraint. The post, published minutes before his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stated that America’s nuclear arsenal had been fully modernized and instructed the “Department of War” to begin tests “on an equal basis” with other nations. The statement followed a week of Russian nuclear activity, including tests of the Burevestnik and Poseidon systems. Trump also said China would reach nuclear parity within five years. Analysts say the move could mark the end of the global nuclear testing moratorium.
