Rescue Crews on February 21, recovered the bodies of nine backcountry skiers killed in a powerful avalanche near Castle Peak, close to Lake Tahoe, concluding a difficult four-day operation hampered by heavy snowfall and avalanche risks. Search teams reached eight victims earlier, while the ninth, missing since Tuesday, was later found nearby after white-out conditions delayed visibility. Recovery efforts were paused due to unsafe conditions. Helicopters from the California National Guard and Highway Patrol hoisted the bodies, following avalanche mitigation using controlled snow release.
