3:22Now PlayingIran’s Foreign Minister has said that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the country’s elite force leading retaliatory actions against the US and Israel, is operating independently. He emphasized that the strike on Oman “was not our choice.” Formed in May 1979 by Ruhollah Khomeini after the Iranian Revolution, the IRGC functions separately from Iran’s conventional army. According to a BBC report, after the 1979 regime change, the new constitution established both a regular military and the IRGC as distinct forces.
