Speaking at the European Parliament, MEP Ondrej Dostal said the US actions in Iran had disrupted energy flows from the Gulf, while Europe had already cut itself off from Russian supplies. Dostal said the bloc should focus on maintaining coal and nuclear energy during the crisis, warning that renewable sources alone would not be enough to meet Europe's needs. Other EU lawmakers also urged the bloc to reduce its reliance on imported energy and accelerate the shift to 'home-grown' alternatives. Oil and gas prices have surged after US and Israeli military operations against Iran and Tehran's retaliatory attacks on Israeli and US assets in the Gulf. With the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for about 20 percent of global oil, effectively closed and Qatar Energy halting LNG production, markets are bracing for tighter supplies and higher prices.
