Speaking during the visit to the Zhongshan Mausoleum in Nanjing, Cheng said she hoped the occasion would help "sow the seeds of peace not only for the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, but also for all of humanity.”
"We should work together to promote reconciliation and unity across the Taiwan Strait and create regional prosperity and peace,” she added. Cheng is leading a delegation on what she has described as a "2026 Peace Journey" to mainland China. The group arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport on Tuesday afternoon, where they were received by Song Tao, director of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office.
The visit marks the first trip to mainland China by a Kuomintang chairperson in a decade, highlighting renewed engagement between the Chinese Communist Party and Taiwan’s main opposition party, and comes ahead of a meeting in Beijing between Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump scheduled to take place in May. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office extended what it described as special courtesy to the delegation. Cheng was greeted with flowers by a welcoming group upon arrival in Shanghai.
