Earlier in May, 2025, the UK agreed to hand over the sovereignty of Chagos to Mauritius, while claiming control over Diego Garcia, a UK-US military base in Chagos, for 99 years with an annual payment of $136 million a year to Mauritius. At the time of signing the deal, the US had welcomed it with the Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailing it as a ‘monumental achievement,’ and a ‘historic agreement.’ However, in 2026 the US started opposing the agreement, with Trump terming it as an ‘act of total weakness.'
