Footage from Tel Aviv shows pedestrians stopping in place and vehicles halting mid-journey as the siren echoed across the city at 11:00. Yom HaZikaron is observed annually in late April or early May as Israel's national day of remembrance. Since 1951, it has been marked on the 4th of Iyar in the Hebrew calendar, the day before Independence Day. This year, commemorations ran from sunset on Monday to sunset on Tuesday.
According to the Hebrew calendar system, a day begins at sunset, so the Memorial Day opens with a siren the preceding evening at 20:00, while the 11:00 siren signals the launch of ceremonies at cemeteries nationwide. The main state ceremony at Mount Herzl Military Cemetery concludes at sundown, after which Israel transitions into celebrations for its 78th Independence Day. The commemorations come amid a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which took effect on Friday following direct talks hosted by Washington between Lebanese and Israeli officials.
