4:07Now PlayingHundreds of protesters took to the streets of the Colombian city of Santa Marta on Monday to demand a transition away from fossil fuels. The march took place as the Caribbean city hosts a global conference aimed at speeding up the shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy.
The April 24–29 conference, co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands, is bringing together ministers, subnational governments, academics and civil society groups. Protesters chanted against oil exploration in the Amazon and fracking to extract gas, while demanding a just transition to renewable energies.
The summit in Santa Marta reflects growing frustration among some governments and advocates that decades of U.N. climate negotiations have failed to directly address fossil fuel production — the main driver of global warming.
