Speaking aboard the USS Boxer in Singapore ahead of an Asian security forum, Hegseth referred to Trump’s remarks during a Cabinet meeting earlier this week.
“He looks in the camera and says, well, Iran can either do it the right way with a deal across the table, or they can deal with my guy on the left,” Hegseth said, referring to himself. The remarks came as negotiations between Washington and Tehran appeared to move closer to a possible breakthrough, although neither side has formally confirmed a final agreement. Trump had posted on Truth Social on Saturday that a peace deal with Iran was “largely negotiated.” However, less than 24 hours later, he appeared to walk back the claim, saying the agreement was “not even fully negotiated yet.” According to Axios, the proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU) is still awaiting final approval from Trump, while Tehran has also not formally accepted the framework. US officials and regional mediators told the outlet the proposed agreement would mainly serve as a first step toward broader negotiations.
