3:42Now PlayingUS Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Saturday downplayed reports of a shift in Washington’s defence policy toward Taiwan during his address at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2026 in Singapore, clarifying that any future decision regarding Taiwan arms sales will rest solely with President Donald Trump following high-stakes talks in Beijing. “Any decision about future Taiwan arms sales, as the president said, will rest with him and is the nature of that relationship. And certainly, having been there for those meetings in Beijing, there's no change in our status there,” Hegseth said. “I think there's been a lot of false reporting with the wrong motives about where we might be we're in a very, very strong position and feel only better about where we're going in the future,” he added.
It follows widespread speculation that the Trump administration may scale back its support for Taipei in exchange for geopolitical concessions from Beijing, which views the island nation as its own territory. Since Trump’s visit to China earlier in May, Washington has delayed a proposed $14 billion arms package for Taiwan, citing the ongoing conflict involving Iran, while also delaying plans to hold direct talks with Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te.
