5:44Now PlayingUS Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the Trump administration's policies on Thursday, while facing sharp exchanges with Democratic lawmakers during a heated House Ways and Means Committee hearing. Bessent argued that Washington has imposed tougher measures on Moscow than any other country, as members of Congress pressed him on inflation, energy prices and the administration's sanctions waivers on Russian oil.
"Make no mistake, Congressman, that this administration has been tougher than any country in the world on the Russian Federation," Bessent asserted. Bessent also defended sanctions waivers on Russian oil purchases, saying they helped keep global energy prices lower during the war in Iran and supported vulnerable countries dependent on affordable fuel supplies. The hearing featured several tense exchanges as lawmakers repeatedly interrupted Bessent while challenging the administration's handling of the economy and foreign policy. Later, Democratic Representative Linda Sanchez accused the Treasury Department of being "the most corrupt Treasury Department in our nation's history".
