3:13Now PlayingAfter an intense overnight session on Capitol Hill, the U.S. Senate passed a 70-billion-dollar funding package for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, and the Border Patrol. The bill cleared the Senate by a vote of 52 to 47, with Republicans backing the measure and Democrats united in opposition. The legislation would fund immigration enforcement operations through the remainder of President Donald Trump's second term.
Democrats led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced amendments to permanently block the fund. Several Republicans also expressed concerns, warning the proposal could create political and legal problems ahead of next year's midterm elections. Despite those objections, efforts to eliminate the fund failed during a marathon series of amendment votes. The controversy has exposed rare cracks within Republican ranks. Senate Republicans had previously forced the Trump administration to pause plans for the fund after concerns emerged that some recipients could include individuals connected to the January 6 Capitol Hill riots. Federal court challenges have also temporarily halted implementation.
