3:17Now PlayingUkrainian officials said on Sunday that a Russian drone struck a facility used for handling spent nuclear fuel near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, raising fresh concerns about nuclear safety amid the ongoing war.
According to statements issued by Ukraine’s General Staff and the country’s state atomic energy agency, reported by Reuters, the attack damaged a container-receiving building at a spent fuel storage facility located about 15 kilometres from the Chernobyl site in northern Ukraine. A fire broke out following the incident but was quickly extinguished by emergency services. Authorities reported no casualties and said radiation levels in the area remained within normal limits.
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986, when an explosion and reactor meltdown released large amounts of radioactive material across parts of Europe. Although the plant is no longer operational, the surrounding area continues to require strict monitoring and management of radioactive waste.
