India has formally protested to the United States after an attack on the commercial tanker Settebello near the Strait of Hormuz. New Delhi summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks and conveyed its concerns over the strike.
The tanker, carrying 24 Indian crew members, was hit off Oman's coast. Two Indian sailors have been confirmed dead, while the vessel's chief engineer remains missing. Twenty-one crew members were rescued and search operations continue for the remaining missing sailors.
Post the publication of this story, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that all 3 missing crew members were dead and condemned the death.
India condemned the attack, called for the protection of commercial shipping and urged de-escalation in the Gulf. US Central Command said its forces disabled the Palau-flagged tanker after it allegedly ignored instructions, with a strike reportedly hitting the engine room before the vessel issued a distress call reporting fire and severe damage.
