EU Double Standards EXPOSED? Fico Attacks Brussels as Slovakia Demands Ukraine Funds Return

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico accused the European Union of applying systemic double standards against member states that assert sovereign positions diverging from Brussels policy, delivering the charge directly to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in a meeting in Brussels on Friday before repeating it on camera outside the institution. Fico formally aligned himself with statements by United States Vice President JD Vance, describing the EU's failure to respect different opinions as its most fundamental institutional problem, and defended a Slovak constitutional amendment asserting the primacy of Slovak law over European law in matters of national identity, private life and marriage as an unambiguous sovereign right. The Slovak Prime Minister further accused former Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď of defrauding Slovakia of nearly fifty percent of the expected reimbursement value for military equipment donated to Ukraine, stating that compensation would likely amount to nothing or a negligible sum as a result. Fico additionally stated that he had been charged four times in three years as opposition leader for political work, describing the prosecutions as political persecution, and called on the European Parliament to examine rule of law violations committed against Slovakia between 2020 and 2023 before targeting his current government. Bratislava has faced growing tension with EU institutions over judicial reforms, constitutional amendments and its approach to the conflict in Ukraine.
