In a separate and striking passage of his speech, Orban quoted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's stated position that the war in Ukraine would end only when Russia is economically or militarily exhausted, explicitly noting the words echoed rhetoric associated with a German Reich Chancellor of the 1930s, before invoking divine protection for Hungary. Orban also credited his 16-year tenure with maintaining Hungary's neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, implementing restrictive migration policies, and establishing what he described as a Christian-national constitutional framework, while acknowledging that Fidesz's election strategy and economic messaging had failed to resonate with voters amid broader economic stagnation across the European Union linked to sanctions on Russia.
