4:18Now PlayingIran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has established new covert cells in Iraq to carry out attacks on Gulf countries hosting US military forces, bypassing traditional militia networks in an effort to avoid detection, according to a Reuters report citing eight Iraqi security, military and militia sources.
The report said the newly formed groups operate outside the command structure of the well-known Islamic Resistance in Iraq umbrella network and instead report directly to the IRGC. According to three sources cited by Reuters, between April 20 and May 17, three or four small cells comprising around 10 elite Iraqi Shi’ite fighters each carried out at least seven drone attacks from remote desert areas near Basra and Samawa.
The attacks reportedly targeted locations in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Several members of the cells were said to have previously belonged to Islamic Resistance in Iraq factions, but now operate under direct IRGC oversight.
