3:03Now PlayingTwo tributes to Lionel Messi reflected Argentina’s devotion to its captain during the 2026 World Cup: a monumental statue in Patagonia and a collective mural near Buenos Aires. In Berazategui, near Buenos Aires, artist Leonel García painted a hyperrealistic mural of a smiling Messi surrounded by the names of more than 1,300 supporters.
The mural was completed in 18 days. People of different ages, backgrounds and political views traveled to the site to add their names beside Messi’s portrait.
The mural eventually reached Messi, who sent a video thanking its creators and the supporters who participated. On the outskirts of Cutral Có, a remote town in the Patagonian steppe, a 26 meter high (85 foot high) statue showed Messi kneeling with the World Cup trophy between his legs and one arm pointing toward the sky. The monument, built with around 70 metric tons of steel, iron and concrete, recreated Messi’s reaction after Argentina defeated France in the 2022 World Cup final.
