America is celebrating its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, marking the semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence with massive nationwide festivities. The celebrations include the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., record-breaking fireworks displays, and a multi-time zone Times Square ball drop, though many outdoor events are adjusting for severe heatwaves
Nearly 50 tall ships and dozens of U.S. Navy warships are gathering in New York Harbor to celebrate America's 250th birthday. The massive "Sail for 250" event features fleets from over 20 countries parading from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, past the Statue of Liberty, and up the Hudson River.
The Statue of Liberty has a long history with big ships, having originally arrived in the United States in pieces aboard the French steamer Isère in 1885. The best places to view historic parades and large vessels in the harbor are Liberty Island and Ellis Island. You can also experience the iconic harbor by booking sailing tours, such as the NYC Statue of Liberty Tall Ship Sail Aboard Clipper City.
