3:27Now PlayingThe US Army has ordered a sweeping reduction of its official social media presence, leaving fewer than 30 organisations authorised to operate accounts and giving commanders 30 days to shut down pages that no longer meet the service's new rules. The late-June memorandum, signed by Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, effectively strips many subordinate units of their independent digital presence.
Army bases, recruiting stations and Morale, Welfare and Recreation offices are among the organisations left off the approved list. That is a significant change to how parts of the US Army have communicated directly with soldiers, military families and local communities. Installation pages, for instance, have routinely carried traffic warnings, safety notices and other local updates, while recruiters have used social platforms as part of their outreach to prospective soldiers.
