4:59Now PlayingVice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas said the bloc was pushing for a seat at the table in talks to implement the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, explaining that negotiations would cover Tehran's nuclear programme, regional armed groups and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Kallas said the future of maritime security arrangements remained unclear, with Iran opposing outside intervention in the Strait of Hormuz. She argued that the EU's existing Operation Aspides could be adapted, but said member states wanted the mission to remain focused on threats to shipping in the Red Sea. "I've always advocated for Operation Aspides that is already there and that is already functioning and has a mandate, just needs to change the operational plan," Kallas said.
Turning to Russia, Kallas said member states had yet to resolve disputes over the proposed 21st sanctions package. Kallas said governments broadly agreed that the war in Ukraine must end, but remained divided over the short-term economic cost of listing particular companies.
