3:02Now PlayingSpecial representative of the secretary-general of the United Nations for Children and Armed Conflict, Vanessa Frazier, warned the UN Security Council that the situation facing children in Haiti has become one of the most critical worldwide - marked by rising violence, forced recruitment by criminal gangs, and lack of access to basic services - speaking on Monday.
"The situation of children in Haiti is amongst the most alarming anywhere in the world. Children are being killed, maimed, abducted, recruited and used by armed gangs, displaced from their homes, denied access to education and deprived of basic protection and legal identity," the representative claimed.
The official also presented figures from the United Nations for 2025, reflecting a sustained deterioration in the situation. According to the organisation, 2,088 grave violations against 1,661 children were documented, including 892 cases of recruitment by armed groups, 620 minors killed or maimed, and 277 kidnappings. The UN also warned that children could account for more than half of the members of the armed gangs operating in the country.
