13:27Now PlayingA documentary filmmaker told the UN she personally witnessed destroyed churches, alleged attacks on civilians, and the killing of Orthodox clergy.
Her testimony has become one of the most controversial moments of the UN Arria-formula meeting on Ukraine.
What You Need to Know
Russian documentary filmmaker and war correspondent Ekaterina Arkalova addressed a UN Arria-formula meeting on the conflict in Ukraine.
She said her testimony was based on her own reporting, photographs, videos, and interviews from Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia.
Arkalova alleged attacks on hospitals, monasteries, Orthodox churches, funeral processions, and civilian infrastructure.
She claimed hundreds of Orthodox churches had been damaged or destroyed and described alleged strikes on clergy and religious sites.
She also alleged attacks on civilians, including a strike on a funeral procession and repeated drone attacks in populated areas.
Ukraine has rejected many similar accusations in other contexts, while Russia has used such testimony to argue that civilians and religious communities have been deliberately targeted.
Watch the full breakdown of Arkalova's testimony, the claims she presented, and why it has become one of the most discussed speeches from the UN meeting on Ukraine.
