3:02Now PlayingSpanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Saturday that fire crews were "in for a difficult few hours" as they responded to wildfires that have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.
"While temperatures have indeed fallen, we do not know exactly how the winds will develop, what their intensity will be, or whether or not dry storms will actually occur as a result of this fire," he said, citing forecasts from Spain's AEMET weather agency and fire experts. The wildfires, fueled by high temperatures and the long-term effects of climate change, caught fire crews and authorities off guard. Firefighters said the blazes spread so fast and violently that they could not be tackled head-on.
