3:31Now PlayingIsrael has officially welcomed the INS Drakon into its navy, marking the arrival of the country's most advanced and expensive submarine to date. Built by German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the vessel was handed over after years of development and is designed specifically for the operational needs of the Israeli Navy. The submarine is estimated to have cost around 634 million dollars and joins Israel's Dolphin-class fleet.
Stretching more than 70 metres in length and displacing over 2,000 tonnes, the INS Drakon is reported to be the largest submarine built in Germany since the Second World War. Israeli defence officials say it incorporates advanced technologies and unique systems that significantly expand the country's maritime surveillance, intelligence gathering and strike capabilities.
The delivery also underscores the long-standing defence partnership between Germany and Israel. Berlin has supplied Israel's Dolphin-class submarines for decades, and the two countries signed another multi-billion-euro agreement in 2022 for three next-generation Dakar-class submarines, expected to enter service from 2031 onward.
