The imagery, released by the UK Ministry of Defence, shows three Project 636.3 Varshavyanka-class diesel-electric submarines in Novorossiysk Bay. The vessels are capable of launching 3M14 Kalibr cruise missiles, which Russia has used to strike targets in Ukraine.
The satellite images, dated June 13, show two submarines inside the inner harbour with large anti-drone structures fitted around their upper sections. Defense Express described the structures as anti-drone “grills” or “barbecues”, which are intended to provide additional protection against aerial drone attacks. The two vessels are also partially submerged, leaving most of their hulls below the waterline while their sails and other upper sections remain exposed. According to Defense Express, Russia is combining the two measures to create an additional layer of protection against Ukrainian drones.
