Dramatic visuals show buildings collapsing, rubble-filled streets and rescuers racing to find survivors. Pereira, Cali, Quibdó and other areas were badly affected, while hospitals and airports also reported damage. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a national emergency as rescue teams worked through the rubble. The quake, one of Colombia’s strongest this century, has triggered aftershocks and widespread disruption, with international assistance being offered as the country battles the catastrophe.
