3:17Now PlayingYet another Democratic primary has gone the progressive way, with Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan winning the Democratic nomination over moderate Congresswoman Angie Craig. Minnesota’s Democratic Senate primary featured a competitive race following Democratic US Senator Tina Smith’s retirement, opening the seat for the first time since 2006. Flanagan, the DFL-endorsed candidate and a candidate backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, defeated Craig, who has represented Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District since 2019.
The race had been described as a national proxy fight between the Democratic Party’s progressive and moderate wings. Flanagan won the DFL endorsement by acclamation in May, while Craig held a significant fundraising advantage. Flanagan will now face GOP nominee Michele Tafoya in the general election.
