Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup, one of four disputed Kuril Islands claimed by both Russia and Japan — immediately reigniting a decades-old territorial fight.
The backstory goes all the way to World War II. Soviet forces seized the islands in the final days of the war, and Russia has controlled them ever since.
Japan, however, calls them the Northern Territories and maintains that they are inherently Japanese territory.
