8:03Now PlayingThe US is looking beyond its current hypersonic weapons as DARPA seeks ideas for a Next Generation Hypersonic Cruise Missile, or NGHCM. The proposed system would aim to combine extreme speed with greater range, manoeuvrability, survivability and affordability. Unlike some existing boost-glide weapons, a hypersonic cruise missile could use a scramjet to sustain flight at speeds above Mach 5. The move comes as Russia and China continue expanding their hypersonic capabilities, while the US develops HACM, Dark Eagle and Conventional Prompt Strike. DARPA's goal is a next-generation weapon that can penetrate sophisticated defences while remaining practical to produce at scale.
